THE ECONOMIC PROGRESS seen by the UAE would not have been possible without massive investment in a sophisticated physical infrastructure comprising efficient road networks, good telecommunications facilities and freely available, affordable electricity and water.
In addition, links with the outside world through the UAE’s first-class airports and seaports, a vital component of trade and tourism, are constantly being upgraded. At the same time the provision of modern housing required to meet the needs of a rapidly increasing population (from around 250,000 in 1971 to an estimated 5 million in 2005) is a constant challenge.
Today, over 75 per cent of the population live in a handful of cities, all of which are experiencing a new wave of infrastructure expansion, much of it on a massive scale.
